From Great-Grandparents to Great-Grandchildren: Matt K.'s Review of Remento

September 2024

Matt K. shares his experience using Remento to document his grandmother's stories, revealing how this technology made capturing her stories as easier for the family than he ever could have imagined.

A New Perspective on Family History

When Matt K. first started using Remento to document his grandmother's stories, he didn't anticipate how much it would change his view of family history. As a grandson and now a father himself, Matt found himself at a unique intersection of generations, able to appreciate the value of preserving family stories in a way he hadn't before.

"As a grandchild, it's pretty cool that I'll be able to share this with my son. When he's old enough to listen and wants to know about his grandma, it's something that can be passed down through generations of the family."

Asking Questions From Remento's Bank of Prompts

One aspect of using Remento that surprised Matt was how much he and his brother enjoyed crafting their own questions. While there were preset prompts available, Matt found himself drawn to the open-ended nature of the platform.

"We can ask our own questions, which is what my brother and II use most...If there's something specific I want to know about, then I can just ask it directly."

This freedom allowed Matt to explore aspects of his grandmother's life he might not have thought to ask about otherwise, leading to unexpected and cherished stories.

Bridging the Technology Gap

Matt was initially concerned about how his grandmother and mother would handle the technology, but he was pleasantly surprised by their experience.

"It's very user-friendly, and you don't have to explain much to get people started. If they can figure it out easily, that's a good sign. The simpler it is for them to use, the more likely they are to get involved and stay engaged."

This ease of use meant that the focus remained on sharing stories, rather than navigating complicated interfaces.

A New Perspective on Family Relationships

Using Remento has given Matt a new lens through which to view his family relationships. He notes how becoming a parent himself has shifted his perspective:

"I think everyone's experienced this where there's that transition from looking up to parents or grandparents as these older figures or respectable figures and you don't really know. But when you become an adult or you have a family that kind of changes your perspective on how you look at them or their experiences."

This shift in perspective has led to deeper, more meaningful conversations with his grandmother, uncovering stories and insights he might have otherwise missed.

Looking to the Future

As Matt continues to use Remento with his family, he's excited about the possibilities it opens up for future generations. The ability to not just read about his grandmother, but to hear her voice telling her own stories, is something he looks forward to sharing with his son.

"It makes me excited that my mom's excited," Matt says. "Because I think it's cool for her to be able to submit what she wants about her legacy to be passed down."

For Matt, Remento has become more than just a tool for recording family history. It's a bridge between generations, a way to deepen family connections, and a means of ensuring that the stories that shape his family's identity will continue to be told for years to come.
